The 2026 Midterms: Why April is Actually the Most Important Month

We all know the date: November 3, 2026. That’s when we head to the booths to decide who controls Congress. But here’s the secret the pros know: by the time you get your "I Voted" sticker in November, the most important choices have already been made.

If you want a say in who actually represents you, you need to look at what’s happening right now.

1. The "Invisible" Election: Primaries are Underway

While November feels far away, the Primary Elections—where parties decide which single candidate will be on the final ballot—are in full swing.

  • If you live in Texas, Illinois, or North Carolina: Your main primaries are already over. Your "finalists" are set.

  • If you live in Ohio, Indiana, or Pennsylvania: Your turn is coming up this May. In many states, the deadline to register to vote in these primaries is happening this week.

2. The Staggering "Entry Fee"

You’ve probably heard that politics is expensive, but the numbers for 2026 are eye-popping. Experts predict this will be the first $10 billion midterm election.

  • House Seats: On average, it costs $2M–$3M to run a winning campaign for the House and have great ideas to stand behind.

  • Senate Seats: In "battleground" states like Georgia or Michigan, candidates and outside groups will easily spend over $100M.

The Bottom Line

The "people" aren't fully chosen yet, but the window is pretty much closed. If you wait until November to start paying attention, you’re just choosing between two options someone else picked for you.

Take five minutes today: Check your primary date and make sure you're registered.
